Performance Grade · Australian Bridge

Your bridge ability,
graded honestly

bridgeranking.net calculates a Performance Grade for every player across participating Australian clubs — using the same methodology as England's National Grading Scheme, adapted for local conditions. One number that means something.

How it works

A grade that reflects how you play now

Unlike a percentage average that remembers every session you've ever played, your Performance Grade weights recent results and lets old ones fade. Strong play this month matters more than strong play two years ago.

16 grade bands

From Two (beginner) to Ace of Spades (elite). Only the top band is split by suit — the same structure as England's National Grading Scheme.

Results decay

Each result contributes less as time passes, reaching zero after about 2,000 boards — roughly ten months of regular play. Your grade reflects your current ability, not career history.

Shrinkage

New and infrequent players' grades are pulled toward 50 until enough boards have been played to establish a reliable picture. Published only after 150 boards.

Rankings update after each session. Every player sees their own grade, their band, and how many boards have been counted toward it.

How grades are calculated

01
Session results are collected

After each session, results are imported from the club's Compscore system via USEBIO XML. Each board pair — and each player — is given an expected score against their opponents' current grades.

02
Over- or under-performance is measured

The difference between your actual percentage and your expected percentage becomes your performance score for the session. Beating stronger players counts more than beating weaker ones.

03
Results are weighted and combined

Recent boards count more than old ones. After 2,000 boards (roughly ten months), a session contributes nothing. The combined weighted average is your Performance Grade. A shrinkage factor prevents wild swings for players with few results.
